MEC Jacob Mamabolo encourages public transport operators make use of alternative dispute resolutions

MEC Mamabolo calls on public transport operators to make use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to resolve disputes

Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo, has called on public transport operators to make use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, to resolve any disputes they may have.

“The Department through its Growing Gauteng Together Through Smart Mobility Vision, is prioritizing a seamless, integrated public transport system, to make travelling safe and convenient for commuters. Therefore, it is imperative that all public transport operators follow the principle of negotiations when trying to resolve problems”, said MEC Mamabolo.

This comes after e-hailing driver partners issued a notice of their intention to go on a planned march to highlight their grievances against e-hailing companies.

The MEC appealed against driver partners resorting to measures which may potentially lead to disruptions, violence and instability in the transport sector.

Following from numerous engagements with e-hailing companies and their partner drivers, the Department and the parties agreed to the appointment of an independent advocate, as a mediator with the aim of resolving the longstanding impasse between e-hailing companies and their driver partners.
A qualified mediator was subsequently appointed to mediate the dispute. The mediation process is currently underway.

MEC Mamabolo emphasized that “the Department has prioritized the resolution of disputes in the public transport space, through negotiations and consultations. We are, therefore, calling on e-hailing companies and their driver partners to embrace and utilize the alternative dispute resolution process, available to them”.
