MEC Vadi calls for urgent measures to ensure commuters’ safety following trains collision
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Dr Ismail Vadi has expressed his heartfelt condolences to families of the three commuters who suffered fatal injuries when two Metrorail trains collided at the Mountain View Train Station in Pretoria, this morning.
The trains, which were both traveling on the same line towards Pretoria direction from Mabopane, collided at Mountain View Station, north of Pretoria.
More than 300 commuters were injured during the accident.
“We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish those injured a speedy recovery,” said Vadi.
“We are deeply shocked by this tragic accident so early in the new year. We call on the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (PRASA) and the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) to urgently investigate the cause of the crash and institute urgent measures to improve commuters’ safety on trains,” MEC Vadi said.
Vadi also expressed his gratitude to the emergency medical services personnel, police and medical teams for their swift response in attending to those who needed medical attention.
