MEC Ismail Vadi opens R25 in Bronkhorstspruit

R193 million R25 upgrade to be re-opened

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, today officially re-opened a 42km stretch of the R25 that has been fully rehabilitated at a cost of R193 million.

The reconstructed provincial road is a single carriageway linking Bronkhorstspruit in Gauteng to Groblersdal in Limpopo province. Traffic volumes on the road are relatively high and include a large component of heavy duty vehicles.

“The R25 had deteriorated over the years and was in need of major rehabilitation. It is a key arterial route that links Gauteng and Limpopo province and serves both the mining and agricultural sectors of the economy,” said Vadi.

He said that in the past the degraded road had posed a grave danger to motorists and truck drivers as the road carried heavy volumes of freight traffic. The R193 million road upgrade has improved mobility and safety as the roadway capacity has been increased, Vadi emphasised.

The rehabilitation project entailed the repairing of the existing road base layer; geometric upgrade of intersections; milling of existing surfacing; cleaning of existing storm water culverts; asphalt surfacing; re-gravelling of shoulders; and installation of road signs, markings and guardrails.

The project involved several sub-contractors with 25 per cent of the work going to SMME’s and local labourers, and included a training and skilling component for workers on site.
