Tsamaya Road to undergo Multi-million Upgrade
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, today launched a R440 million road construction project on the K54 (Tsamaya Road) in Mamelodi, Tshwane east. Tsamaya road is one of the busiest arterial routes in the township.
“This multi-million township project is wholly funded by the Gauteng Provincial Government,” said Vadi.
“It includes constructing a northbound dual carriageway, two bridges over the railway line, cycle and pedestrian paths as well as taxi lay-bys,” he added.
Other works include resurfacing the section leading to the N4 freeway, application of road markings and the installation of traffic signals.
Vadi said that upon completion the road will serve as an important link between Mamelodi and the N4 freeway and act as an alternative to Moloto Road. It will aslo improve road safety in the township.
He emphasised that the K54 will function as a catalyst for the stimulation of the socio-economic development in Mamelodi and surrounding areas through the provision of a modern road network. Furthermore, K54 has an important function as part of a future ring road for greater Tshwane.
“The provincial road and transport department is wholly committed to providing training, skills development and empowering local contractors. The project will see the main contractor sub-contracting work to local SMMEs,” said Vadi.
He added that township communities should be beneficiaries through the various employment, training and sub-contracting opportunities, particularly for women, youth and people with disabilities that the project afforded.
He also stressed that like other projects managed by the Department, the contractor is “expected to be complete the road on time, within budget and deliver a good quality product”.
The department appealed to motorists in the area to exercise caution during the construction period, which is expected to take 30 months.
