MEC Ismail Vadi condemns vandalism of Gautrain

The vandalism which took place on Gautrain is vehemently condemned by Dr. Ismail Vadi, Gauteng MEC Roads and Transport.

On 3 January, on the last train from Centurion, a man boarded Gautrain and smashed several windows in two carriages with a blunt instrument.
“Due to Gautrain’s stringent security measures, the incident was effectively and immediately managed,” said Dr. Vadi. “Gautrain security was alerted and was waiting on the platform at Pretoria station along with members of the South African Police Services. The man was arrested and a case of malicious damage to property has been opened.” Nobody was hurt during the incident.

Camera surveillance and visible policing are just some of the security measures in place when passengers enter Gautrain station precincts. Once inside the train, additional security systems further ensure that passengers safely reach their destinations.

Other measures include:

  • Approximately 650 Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras keep a watchful eye over the entire system. In addition, just over 400 security guards are on duty at any given time. As a security measure, only valid ticket holders have access to station precincts, car parks and trains.
  • Automatic fare collection systems electronically scan tickets and smart cards swiped at station access gates.
  • Station platforms are guarded by CCTV systems as well as alarms to prevent any unauthorised entry into tunnels or on the tracks.
  • Inside each train, CCTV cameras monitor passenger movements. Live footage is examined by staff at the central control centre where backups are stored for future reference.
  • Train drivers are in radio contact with the central control centre and drivers have the option to communicate with passengers, should the need arise.
  • To further enhance safety and security for passengers, each train is manned by two security guards who also function as train conductors.
  • Panic buttons placed inside the train can be used to call the security guards if needed.
  • CCTV systems monitor each station concourse, parking area and station precinct. In addition, the SAPS Railway Police patrols each station.

Safety and security is, however also the responsibility of users of the system. Acceptable passenger behaviour also enhances and promotes the use of public transport by improving the actual level of security.
