MEC Ismail Vadi condemns Tembisa Taxi Rank shooting incident

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, has strongly condemned this morning’s shooting incident which has led to the loss of life at the Sangweni Taxi Rank in Tembisa.

Four passengers were shot in the early hours of this morning and one died in what is believed to be taxi related violence between the Midrand Taxi Association and Tembisa/Alexander Taxi Association.

The woman who was killed during this morning’s shooting was on her way to work at the National Prosecuting Authority.

Vadi said that the growing incidents of taxi violence in the province are totally unacceptable. “The numbers of victims of taxi violence are growing on a weekly basis and these criminal attacks must come to an end”, he said.

He called on the collective leadership of the taxi industry and government officials, particularly from the security cluster, to act decisively to bring the situation under control.

MEC Vadi expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as her co-workers at the National Prosecuting Authority and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased as well as her colleagues at the NPA during this time of grief. We would also like to wish the injured a speedy recovery. Once again, we call for calm and urge those that might have information to come forward and assist law enforcement agencies.”

The taxi rank has been closed for now as investigations into the incident are underway.
