“Catch the Train!”: Special services for Cape Town Cycle Tour weekend
Western Cape Mobility Minister, Isaac Sileku, sends his best wishes to the thousands of cyclists and spectators taking part in this year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour. As a keen cyclist himself, he understands how much preparation and focus race day requires. The event also shows how the province’s public transport system works together. On Sunday, special train services will carry large numbers of residents, offering a cheaper and easier alternative to driving while connecting communities across the province.
“We want to give everyone more travel choices and make it more affordable. Using trains for events like the Cycle Tour shows how efficiently rail can move people and reduce traffic. Improving our rail network is not just about transport; it is about connecting people to jobs, schools, and opportunities.”
The Cycle Tour also highlights a common problem in the Western Cape: roads in and around Cape Town are often very busy. Getting more residents to use trains is a key way to ease traffic, shorten travel times, and make moving around the city easier.
“Promoting cycling is a big part of our plan for an inclusive and sustainable transport system. By connecting cycling with trains, we cut carbon emissions, encourage healthy lifestyles, and make commuting safer and easier for everyone, not just during special events. Many cyclists will use PRASA trains and MyCiTi shuttles, showing how different transport options can work together smoothly.”
Cyclists can take a return trip on PRASA trains for R50, while spectators pay R20. This helps people avoid road closures, traffic jams, and parking problems, making the trip safer and more convenient. Strategic park-and-ride spots include the Southern Line from Cape Town to Fish Hoek, with public parking at Observatory, Rosebank, Rondebosch, and Kenilworth, secure PRASA parking at Lakeside, public parking opposite the station and at the beach in Fish Hoek, and PRASA parking at Glencairn. On the Northern Line from Strand and Kraaifontein to Cape Town, Tygerberg and Vasco stations have PRASA parking available.
Minister Sileku and PRASA Western Cape Regional Manager Raymond Maseko encourage everyone to arrive early to get a parking spot and secure their train trip. Full schedules and details are available on PRASA Western Cape’s official social media channels.
“To every cyclist tackling the Suikerbossie climb, we hope you enjoy the ride, stay safe, and thank you for choosing the smarter, greener way to travel. See you on the road!” concluded Minister Sileku.
