The Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, has taken a significant step in positioning the Central Karoo as a leading non-motorised, environmental friendly transport district by distributing 124 bicycles to several local schools, a cycling club, and neighbourhood watches (NHWs). Distribution took place from 24 to 27 February and was done in collaboration with the Department of Police Oversight and Community Safety (POCS) and carried out in collaboration with the Beaufort West Municipality and South African Police Service (SAPS). The goal is to enhance community mobility and bring dignity to school learners, ensuring they have a reliable means to travel to school and back.
Minister Sileku stated, “Bicycles are more than just a mode of transport; they provide opportunities. By equipping learners with reliable means to get to school, we not only support their education but also enhance community safety efforts through empowered neighbourhood watch groups. This initiative is integral to our vision of establishing the Central Karoo as a non-motorised district, ensuring that our communities thrive.”
This initiative addresses key objectives:
• Transportation Challenges: Providing bicycles to facilitate daily commutes, making education more accessible.
• Safety and Visibility: Distributing bicycles and essential lights to enhance the safety of all users.
• Sustainable Transport: Fostering a culture of cycling as an affordable, healthy mode of transport.
• Community Health and Environment: Reducing reliance on motor vehicles, contributing to environmental sustainability and improved community health.
The bicycles, distributed in Merweville, Nelspoort, Mooreesburg, and Beaufort West, represent a critical step in promoting non-motorised transport.
As part of the Western Cape Government’s broader efforts to promote sustainable transport, the Bicycle Distribution Project enhances mobility and contributes to local economic development by supporting small businesses and job seekers who rely on affordable transport. With NHW members patrolling their areas more efficiently, the initiative also plays a vital role in helping reduce crime and enhancing community safety.
Minister Sileku further emphasised the importance of collaboration: “This project showcases the power of partnership between government, municipalities, law enforcement, and community stakeholders. By working together, we are investing in the safety, education, and economic well-being of our communities, while positioning the Central Karoo as a model for non-motorised districts.”
This year, the Bicycle Distribution Project has successfully handed over a total of 155 bicycles, reinforcing the Western Cape Government’s commitment to accessible, sustainable, and inclusive transport solutions that lead to positive environmental and economic outcomes.
