MEC Hope Papo on fighting corruption in Gauteng health facilities

Department fights corruption in all its facilities

Employees of Masakhane Laundry in Tshwane have held a picket and wildcat protest this morning after receiving news that one official will face disciplinary action following allegations of contravening recruitment procedures in the facility.

The department has been investigating these allegations since last year and evidence has been found against one of the suspected officials. Staff recruitment was called off at this facility last year, when allegations surfaced that the selection process was compromised.

A team from the provincial head office was dispatched to the facility this morning and has held meetings all day with labour representatives in an attempt to resolve the conflict.

The MEC for Health Hope Papo has appealed for calm and called on the employees to work with the department to fight eliminate fraud and corruption in the system.

“The department has no room for corrupt officials, those that are suspected of misconduct will be investigated and appropriate action taken,” he reiterated.

MEC Papo encouraged victims of job scams and other acts of corruption to report the officials to heads of public health institutions or submitted through the department’s 24 hour call centre which is 0860 011 000.

The department would like to assure patients and their family members that there is sufficient linen for all those admitted in Tshwane hospitals including Kalafong. The delivery of linen to hospitals was not affected as trucks were able to leave the laundry to deliver linen to hospitals.

“Incompetency, negligence and misconduct have no place in the public hospitals in the province,” concludes MEC.
