Destitute families in Peelton to get new homes

In an effort to alleviate poverty levels, the MEC for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison Helen Sauls-August, launched Peelton Legacy 20 Project on 24 February 2014. The aim of the project is to build houses for destitute and vulnerable groups in Peelton to mark the 20 years of Democracy.

The day was also to honour the late Minister of Safety and Security Steve Tshwete who played a pivotal role in serving the communities of the EC through transforming government and the SAPS. A wreath laying ceremony was held at the gravesite where family members led tributes in his honour. “My father was committed in improving people’s lives in the EC… as the family we are glad the Department of Human Settlements has chosen to remember him like this, by giving our poor people houses,” said Mayihlome Tshwete.

The construction of the houses would be done over the next six months. The department has also developed norms and standards for the provision of housing units and improved quality of houses built for destitute people in the province. The target this year is to build 1200 houses for destitute families.

The normal houses don’t have these provisions.

The programme also included an Imbizo in Mpenge-mpenge Community Hall where the community members interacted with stakeholders on safety issues affecting them such as illegal taverns in the area.
