MEC gives car free day thumbs up

On 20 October 2009, Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Mr Bheki Nkosi showed support for the Car-Free Cay initiative by using public transport to get to the office. He travelled from Centurion, Tshwane to Johannesburg sharing a ride with commuters in a minibus taxi.

By using public transport the MEC has highlighted the urgent need to improve the public transport sector that services thousands of commuters everyday. This also exposed him to the traffic problems experienced by motorists and commuters on a daily basis to get to work and other destinations.

Car-Free Day is observed throughout cities of the world and is aimed at creating public awareness on how private car users can contribute to the reduction in air pollution and traffic congestion. Throughout this month, the department is on a mission to showcase the strides that have been made to improve public transport as a whole. The department also seeks identify problems associated with the industry and involve stakeholders in resolving them. In promoting the use of public transport, steps are being taken to improve the safety of passengers, customer service, eliminate reckless driving by operators as well as the removal of old and unroadworthy vehicles on the roads.

The recent launch of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system, by the City of Johannesburg demonstrated the government’s effort to improve public transport in order to have affordable and safe mobility of people of Gauteng. This also goes to improving mobility by having fewer private vehicles on the road network and reduces congestion.
