MEC extends shebeen permits

The MEC for Gauteng Economic Development, Ms Qedani Mahlangu, has extended liquor trading permits for shebeens from 1 July 2012 until 28 February 2013.

The current shebeen permits are due to expire on 30 June 2012. The extension will be used to provide space for the migration of shebeen permits into the liquor licensing regime. This will lead to better regulation of the sale of liquor in the province.

The extension of shebeen permits is in the public interest and will ensure, among others, that:

  • rights of individual are not adversely affected
  • there is no unreasonable burden on anyone
  • permit holders are fully protected and operate within the framework of the law and comply with such.
