MEC Dodovu condems public violence near Ventersdorp

North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, China Dododu has adviced the community of Goedgevonden to refrain from using violent measures when rasing their grievances and dissatisfaction towards governement.

This follows the recent violent service delivery protests by community members of Goedgevonden and Boikhutsong near Ventersdorp where residents are throwing stones at motorists and barricading the road between Rustenburg and Ventersdorp.

“We cannot allow a situation where innocent people and tourists get affected as the protesters are mainly targeting those travelling either from or to Rustenburg. Our country is currently hosting the Orange Africa Cup of Nations and Rustenburg is one of the host cities therefore we cannot tolerate such violent demonstrations. Any person found to have been engaged in any form of public violence will face the full might of the law’, he said.

Issues raised by the two communities include low-cost housing, water, electricity and road maintenance.

Meanwhile, the department  will engage all relevant stakeholders to find agreeable solutions to enable all parties involved to put the matter to rest for good.
