As the rest of the country celebrates Women’s Day on Thursday, 9 August, the North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, China Dodovu has also added his voice by applauding and saluting all the women in his department and in the local government sector.
“56 years since the historic women’s march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria is a long time yet we see many of our women especially those in rural areas, being affected by poverty, inequality and unemployment. Government has made a lot of strides in making available economic opportunities in order to lessen the dependency on government. I really must applaud those who are doing it for themselves in the previously male dominated industries such as farming and mining.
We have also seen an improvement in the number of women councillors and leadership positions in the recent years. We do acknowledge that a lot still has to be done to ensure the kind of representation we want, but with the vigor and enthusiasm around us the situation is bound to improve”, says MEC Dodovu.
He has also paid tribute to women in his department. “On this particular day, I want to extend my gratitude to all the women in the North West Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs for their contribution and tireless efforts of making that the department deliver on its mandate”, he says.
South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.
Government has since declared August women’s month and 9 August is celebrated annually as Women’s Day. The theme for 2012 is: "56 years of women united against poverty, inequality and unemployment".
