MEC Dodovu anchors change and development in local government

The challenges facing local government in the North West are: poor leadership, governance and oversights at municipal councils, lack of administration leadership of municipalities, poor or lack of service delivery, poor financial management and controls, persistent negative audit outcomes, lack of public involvement in service delivery, governance mattes, fraud and corrupt practices as well as a non-compliance to legislation.

This was mentioned by the North West MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, China Dodovu today during the 2012/2013 Budget Speech at the Legislature.

“The bottom line is that as we sharpen and deepen our understanding of these problems and challenges, we need to speedily find solution to them as some of the municipalities are nearing collapse both in terms of administration and governance which negatively affect service delivery”, he said.

MEC Dodovu said that the department needs to mainstream its hands-on support to local government over the next few years in order to better the lives of the people of the North West.

“In fact, what underpins our conviction should be an unflinching commitment to create a new set of opportunities and challenges for the course of municipal transformation and development. Through our undiminished vitality and determination, our activities, our interests, our actions and our pronouncements, must remain for millions of our people, a constant source of hope and encouragement”, he said.
