MEC Debbie Schäfer on Eskom’s load shedding

It has been brought to our attention that Eskom has Stage 2 load shedding planned for today and the upcoming week.

Fortunately there are no National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations taking place this week that are dependent on electricity. The planned load shedding could however have an effect on Grade 12 learners that need electricity to study.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has informed Principals of all schools offering Grade 12 about the planned load shedding and have been asked to inform all Grade 12 learners, especially those that travel by train that they make appropriate alternative arrangements to ensure that they arrive at the exam venues on time this week.

We appeal to all Grade 12 learners to be mindful of the fact that  public transport could also be affected by the load shedding and ensure that they leave home earlier so as to make up for any possible delays.

It is unfortunate that the scheduled load shedding is taking place at such a crucial time for our Grade 12 learners.

WCED officials met this morning to consider appropriate measures if any learners are affected by load shedding.

The Stage 2 schedule can be viewed on Eskom’s website.
