On 10 November 2009 the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr Dan Kgothule, met with the Board of Athletics Free State (AFS). The objective of the meeting was to discuss the future of athletics in the Free State as well as the partnership and working relations between the department and AFS that will create an enabling environment for sustainable growth.
Some of the critical decisions reached at the meeting are the following:
* Structures will be reviewed in order to make athletics demographically representative
* Reviewed structures will enable implementation of the development continuum of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) that AFS, as an accredited affiliate of Athletics South Africa (ASA), subscribes to
* Within the parameters of the IAAF, a new dispensation that prioritises athletics in Free State schools will be pursued
* Capacity building programmes designed to enable sustainable and demographic growth for athletics in the Free State will be the major focus.
A working committee of five people, consisting of three AFS officials and two departmental officials has been established to ensure that these and other decisions are implemented.
With all of these in mind an exciting and promising time lies ahead for athletics in the Free State. MEC Kgothule is ready to assist all sport federations for as long as they are properly constituted.
