MEC D Mohono on death of two drivers and injury of passenger in head-on collision on R24 Rustenburg-Krugersdorp road


Two drivers aged 66 and 60 died and a passenger was critically injured in a head on collision involving a BMW and Panel Van on the R24 Rustenburg-Krugersdorp road in the North West province on Monday afternoon.

Speeding is suspected to have caused the accident that occurred on a curve near the Boons turnoff at around 3:00 pm. It is alleged that the driver of the BMW who was driving towards Rustenburg overtook another vehicle on a barrier line and collided head on with the Renault panel van which was driving towards Krugersdorp.

Both male drivers died on impact while a male passengers who was in the panel van was rushed to Job Shimankana Tabane Provincial Hospital with critical injuries.

Emergency personnel had to use the Jaws of life to free the bodies of the drivers from their vehicles. North West Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide, negligentand or reckless driving.

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Safety & Liaison, Desbo Mohono wishes to convey his condolences to the families of the drivers who lost their lives in the accident and wishes the injured passenger a speedy recovery.

MEC Mohono who is still shocked by the death of 6 people on the R556 Sun City-Pretoria road on Saturday night appeals to motorists to observe rules of the road and to drive within the permissible speed limit as speeding and reckless driving results in unnecessary loss of lives.
