MEC condemns negligent driving

Gauteng MEC for Health and Social Development, Ntombi Mekgwe sends her condolences to the family of a caretaker who was killed in the incident in which a truck collided with a school bus for disabled children in Soweto, Johannesburg this morning.

In this incident, a truck crashed into a bus carrying 59 disabled learners of Chris Hani Baragwanath’s Philip Kushlick School for cerebral palsy. A caretaker was killed and four children were injured and other children escaped unharmed.

MEC Mekgwe has called on the police to ensure that through investigation is conducted into the matter and that necessary measures are taken if the truck driver is found guilty.

“We cannot allow a situation where the lives of the vulnerable people particularly the disabled are endangered as the result of reckless driving”, said MEC Mekgwe.

The injured children were treated at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital and later discharged. The truck driver was arrested on charges of reckless and negligent driving.
