MEC responsible for Human Settlements, Safety and Liaison in the province has condemned the gruesome killing of a police officer in Port Alfred last Thursday calling ‘it barbaric and a set back in the fight against crime in the province.’
“The loss of a police life is a serious set-back in our fight against crime as it endangers lives of our communities,” says Helen Sauls-August.
She says the killing of police officer is a direct threat to our constitutional democracy and a threat that shouldn’t be taken lightly by society.
“The murder of police officials affects morale of their colleagues whilst also traumatizing to families. These deaths lead to uncertainty and feeling of insecurity within the police especially in cases where off-duty police officers are unknown and targeted by criminals”
Eastern Cape Police are still investigating a case of murder after a police constable was gunned down on Thursday night. The constable was shot by an unknown gunmen while he was at his girlfriend’s house in Peddie. The constable was attached to the crime intelligence unit in the area.
The MEC has also called for a speedy arrest of the suspect and sent her condolences to the deceased family. “We are saddened by this gruesome killing on one of our members, but our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” she said adding that police in the province won’t rest until the suspect has been arrested.
