Order has been restored in Ledig near Sun City, following the successful intervention of MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements in Bokone Bophirima, Collen Maine who has been in the area, engaging at length with all affected parties in since the beginning of the week.
On Thursday, community leaders committed to ensure that order is sustained throughout, whilst engagements continue to bring the matters that led to the violent protests, to finality. More than 30 people who were arrested since the weekend, were released on R500 bail each on Thursday after appearing at the Mogwase magistrate court. A Board Director of Bakubung Community Development Corporation (BCDC) and Bakubung Economic Development Unit (BEDU), Mr Johannes Phologane, whom they community accuse of embezzling a whooping R700 million earned from sales of shares, and three local councillors have agreed to resign from their positions.
MEC Maine said he is confident that the matter would be brought to finality, amicably. “As the provincial government, we want to get to a point where community funds are accounted for and the community is also brought up to speed on how their monies are invested and spent. We will not allow a situation where the community has no say in profit made from the land of their forefathers, get managed elsewhere. As such, we have requested that the articles of association of all the investment companies be reviewed, to allow members of the community to be given an opportunity to elect board members’’, said MEC Maine.
