MEC Carlisle on National Prosecuting Authority's (NPAs) Drager decision - suspected drunk drivers will not be off the hook for long

Robin Carlisle, the Western Cape MEC for Transport and Public Works has warned suspected drunk drivers that were tested using a Drager breathalyser that the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPAs) decision to postpone their cases does not mean they are off the hook for long.

When we win that case in the Cape High Court the NPA will then bring all those cases back on to the court roll.

We welcome this case - our country’s forensic labs are currently dysfunctional and sometimes it takes a year to get blood results. If the court finds in favour of the Drager then the time it takes to get someone convicted is going to be very quick.

We are confident that we are going to win that case. There is nothing we have heard so far in the court case that worries us. But if we don’t win it then we are going to appeal the decision all the way to the Constitutional Court.
