MEC Butana Komphela welcomes the arrest of nine police officers at the border post

Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport Honourable Butana Komphela has expressed a word of accolade for the good work by South African Police Service (SAPS) to clean their own ranks.

“I support 100% the drive by the police to clean the rot and cancer of corruption within the SAPS,” said the MEC. He said this after nine police members and six other officials from Home Affairs were arrested for alleged acts of corruption.

It is alleged they flouted almost all standing regulations and procedures at the Caledonspoort Border Post in return for financial gains.

“People accuse the government about porous Border Posts when in actual fact officers are deployed at Border Posts with trust, and then betray that trust with impunity,” said Butana Komphela.

The MEC went on to say, "the country is facing serious challenges regarding cross border crime such as trafficking of human, hard drugs and other contraband stuff like cigarettes, motor vehicle and stock theft etc."

The arrest of these officials sends a strong message that criminal element shall be flushed out of government services.
