MEC Butana Komphela opens Heilbron - Petrus Steyn road

The MEC for Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State honourable Butana Komphela officially opened the Heilbron- Petrus Steyn road last week Friday at a function attended by thousands of ngwathe residents.  Road users traveling from Gauteng to the Eastern Free State and Lesotho will now have a smooth journey as the rehabilitation of the road has been completed.

This road is one of the main arteries between Gauteng, the Eastern Free State and Lesotho and one of the main public transport routes in the province. It is also one of the flagship projects of the Department of Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State Province and will be officially opened during the Transport Month in October 2013.

“We are officially opening the Heilbron – Petrus Steyn road that has brought huge economic prospects to the area”, said MEC Butana komphela. He said that the road created jobs for numerous local people and small contractors in the area.

During the construction of the road, 382 jobs were created of which 246 were awarded to youth, 80 to women and 56 to men. The total amount spend on labour is R25.63 million and R26.8 million was spent on contractor development through the appointment of Affirmable Business Enterprise (ABE) contractors. An amount of R472 587.00 was spent on training and 770 certificates were handed out for road construction related training such as the laying of pipe and sub-surface drains, construction of concrete lined open v-drains, slurry work, nuclear gauge training and the creating of culverts (head and wing walls). Workers were also trained in first aid, occupational health and safety, environmental awareness and HIV awareness.
