Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Honourable Butana Komphela has been inundated with complaints on alleged misuse of Identification Lamps by motorists on our roads in the province.
In terms of the National Road Traffic Act 1996 (Act No. 93 of 1996), only designated vehicles may use Identification Lamps. (Examples of Identification Lamps are those used by Police, Traffic, Security, Ambulances, Fire Engines, and Break - Downs etc.)
The Legal Requirement for use of Identification Lamps is addressed in Regulation 176 of the above-mentioned Act. Any person using the Identification Lamps in a vehicle not covered by the Act, his or her vehicle shall be impounded.
The Honourable MEC appeals to all persons or entities who misuse Identification Lamps to desist from doing so with immediate effect, otherwise such vehicles will be impounded.
The power to approve any deviation from the Act is vested with the MEC: Police, Roads and Transport in the Province and any form of non – compliance will be subjected to impoundment of such vehicles and stringent penalties as determined by the MEC.
