MEC Barry appeals for support for the flight service between Mthatha and Port Elizabeth

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Ghishma Barry, has called on the people of the province to support the Fridays’ flight service between Mthatha and Port Elizabeth.

While presenting the Department of Transport policy speech for 2010/11 financial year, MEC Barry said:

“The latest developments at the Mthatha airport have prompted Airlink to introduce a flight service on the route between Port Elizabeth and Mthatha on Fridays as from 26 February 2010 and I would like to call upon all honourable members of this house and the people of the Eastern Cape to support this service”.

The construction of a temporary terminal building has been completed. A new navigational equipment bid was awarded in January 2010 and delivery is expected in April 2010 from Italy.

Air travel passenger numbers were down on last year’s figures due to the global economic climate (14 316 in 2008 compared to 13 227 in 2009). The service on the route between Mthatha and OR Tambo International Airport will still continue.
