MEC Anton Bredell on Stellenbosch Municipality alleged irregularities in managing lease agreements and disposal of municipal properties

Western Cape Government to investigate Stellenbosch Municipality for potential irregularities in the management of lease agreements and the disposal of municipal properties.

Anton Bredell, Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning today confirmed that the Western Cape Department of Local Government conducted a preliminary investigation after receiving complaints regarding the non-compliance with legislative requirements governing the leasing and disposal of municipal properties by the Stellenbosch Municipality.

“Based on the information presented to me today, I have decided on the following actions:

  • The matter be referred to Provincial Treasury to assess the municipality’s current approach and policies relating to leasing and disposal of properties.
  • The matter be referred to Legal Services in the Department of the Premier for an assessment on the legal and financial implications for the lessor and where applicable for the lessee.
  • Should serious malpractice or maladministration be identified, the matter be subjected to a full investigation.”

Minister Bredell said that the long-term stability of any municipality is grounded in strong policies and the adherence to all applicable legislation. “I trust we will receive full cooperation form Stellenbosch Municipality with this process.”

“I am also aware of allegations and accusations being made on social media within the Stellenbosch community relating to these matters. This is not helping the processes that will now follow. I want to assure the community that we will investigate these matters in a thorough and professional manner,” Minister Bredell said.
