MEC Anton Bredell on meeting with Langeberg Municipality to discuss water security issues

Anton Bredell, Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, recently met with the Langeberg Municipality to discuss water security matters.

“The Langeberg region has experienced population and economic growth of approximately 3% in recent years, placing increasing pressure on the municipality’s ability to provide basic services,” Minister Bredell said.

The Municipality reported that its ability to ensure water security for the towns of Robertson, Ashton, McGregor and Montagu is largely dependent on water extraction from the Breede River. The Municipality is currently in the final phase of securing additional water extraction rights of 120 liters per second from the Breede River to improve long-term water security for these towns.

Robertson’s Dassieshoek Dam, which is rain-fed, serves as a buffer during peak water consumption periods. However, the dam has recently run dry, placing strain on the municipality’s water supply system. The Department of Local Government is investing R1.8 million to support preparatory work aimed at increasing the dam’s capacity by 30%. The Department is also assisting the Municipality in securing funding for the construction phase. In addition, support will be provided for the development of a borehole to further strengthen water security in Robertson.

The Municipality further reported that Assessments for possible boreholes were concluded for Montagu, which is currently supplied via an ageing pipeline that transports water from the Breede River in Ashton. According to the Municipality, sourcing water closer to Montagu will be more cost-effective than maintaining and eventually replacing the existing pipeline network.

Minister Bredell said he is satisfied with the Municipality’s water management and long-term planning. “The Municipality is managing a water supply system that is operating close to capacity due to rapid population and economic growth. To ensure future water security, two key actions are required: continued investment in infrastructure and sound water management by the Municipality, and responsible water use by residents and businesses, recognising that water is a scarce resource.”
