MEC Alan Winde on launch of Thokozani’s Ovation wines

Black-owned wine label heads to the shelves of one of SA's largest retailers

A black-owned wine label in the Western Cape has launched a new offering, produced exclusively for one of South Africa’s biggest retailers.

Thokozani Wines, an empowerment initiative from Diemersfontein Wine Estate, has launched their new wine label, Ovation.

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, attended the launch at Diemersfontein Wine Estate last week.

Ovation, which is a collection of three wines, is exclusively produced for Woolworths.

Apart from the wine range, Thokozani also owns and operates the conferencing facilities at Diemersfontein.

Minister Winde congratulated Thokozani, adding that transformation of the wine industry was a key priority for the Western Cape.

“South African winemakers produce among the highest quality wines in the world. Thokozani’s latest deal is proof of the world-class wine produced in our region. We need to celebrate more of these success stories.

“Project Khulisa has identified the wine industry as a focus area. It is our goal to increase exports to strategic markets such as China and Angola. Our objective is to double wine exports to these destinations by 2025.

The transformation of the industry is a key part of our action plan.”

Denise Stubbs, the director of Thokozani, said through the empowerment initiative employees had become shareholders and then owners of the business.
