Western Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Alan Winde highlights economic impact of major events
Cycling events will generate over R600 million for the Western Cape economy over the next two weeks. Alan Winde, MEC of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, said cycling tourism was a major boon for the economy and tourism.
This weekend, 30 000 cyclists are in the city for the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Momentum Cycle Tour. The race’s estimated economic impact is R450 million.
On 23 March, riders from across the world will line up at the starting point for the Absa Cape Epic, a world-renowned eight day mountain bike stage race.
The Absa Cape Epic takes riders along some of the Western Cape’s most picturesque mountain passes.
“The Absa Cape Epic generates R218 million for the local economy. This shows us the significant economic contribution of signature events. In the previous financial year, events in general generated R1.3 billion and attracted 196 600 tourists to our province,” said MEC Winde.
MEC Winde added that as part of a cycling tourism strategy, awareness would have to be raised about safe cycling.
“As cyclists prepare for these races, I want to encourage them to be mindful on our roads. We need to change the dynamic between motorists and cyclists – it goes both ways. Cyclists must play their part by respecting fellow road users,” said MEC Winde.
This weekend MEC Winde will participate in the Pedal Power Association’s “Ride for your life” safe cycling awareness race. The race takes place on 8 March, starting at 7h00 at Maiden’s Cove between Camps Bay and Clifton. MEC Winde will also participate in the Argus.
