MEC Alan Winde encourages tourism sector to enter Lilizela Awards

Alan Winde, MEC of Economic Opportunities, has encouraged the Western Cape’s tourism sector to enter the national Lilizela Awards. MEC Winde said the province’s sector consistently had a strong showing at the awards, raking in several top accolades.

“I’m pleased that the organisers have introduced the MEC’s award category this year, which allows Provincial MECs to select a winner. Our tourism sector is full of vibrant, innovative entrepreneurs and I am looking forward to this year’s submissions. The Western Cape has set the standard for service excellence and I wish our entrants the best,” said MEC Winde.

The Tour Operator category has also been added to the 2015 Awards, bringing the total number of categories to nine. The closing date for entries is 15 May 2015 and public voting closes on 31 May 2015.

MEC Winde said tourism was one of Project Khulisa’s focus areas.

“Tourism is our fastest growing sector, employing over 204 000 people in formal jobs and generating R17 billion for our local economy. Over the next five years, under a high growth scenario, this sector has the potential to add a further 100 000 formal jobs. To reach these targets we have to stay competitive so we can continue to increase tourist numbers. We know that great service and rich, unique experiences are draw-cards for visitors and I want to encourage our sector to keep re-inventing themselves.”
