Young Western Cape winemakers win at national awards
Young winemakers from the Western Cape have scooped top awards at one of the country’s most prestigious competitions.
Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, congratulated students from the Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute on winning three gold medals at the Veritas Awards 2017. This year the awards received 1 638 entries. The ceremony took place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre at the weekend.
The following wines earned gold medals:
- Elsenburg Fino Sherry 2014;
- Elsenburg Mourvèdre 2016;
- 19 year old Elsenburg Potstill Brandy
“In total, wines entered by our students won seven medals. Aside from the three golds, the students were also awarded two silver and two bronze medals. This is Elsenburg’s best performance since it first entered the awards.
“The Veritas Awards offers great exposure for young winemakers. This platform provides an opportunity for the Elsenburg cellar to showcase the talent of our winemaking students. I would like to congratulate them for making the Western Cape proud.”
Through Project Khulisa, wine has been identified as a key competitive sector for growth and job creation, particularly through increased exports: “South African wine is becoming known for its quality. As the future of the industry, these young winemakers will ensure we continue to create growth and jobs in this space, by growing our reputation as a globally compelling offering.”
