The Minister of Sport and Recreation SA, Hon. Fikile Mbalula, led Team SA; athletes and officials, in the South African Flag raising ceremony at the Olympic Village, London in the afternoon today.
Minister Fikile Mbalula, flanked by the Team SA Chef de Mission, Ms Patience Shikwambana, officiated the singing of the national anthem and raising the flag.Mbalula after the exchange of presentaries on the Olympic Village Stage with the Village Mayor visited the Tuscan House, where South African team is based.
The Chef de Mission, Ms Shikwambana took the Minister on a tour to the house and also inspected the medical facilities and the living environment for the safety and health of the athletes.
"I am quite satisfied with the quality of living for our athletes and hopefully with the motivation they received from Ernie Els (British Open Champion) win, Hashim Amla (history making 311 runs), Graeme Smith (100 Career Test Series) and the Proteas win on the British soil, will inject some dose of podium finish" said Minister Mbalula in the very hot British weather.
Mbalula spent half a day at the Olympic Village 'telling athletes about how Ernie Els came from afar to give a clinical finish at the British Open'. He also told them about the performance of the Protea Team at the Kia Oval, London. The athletes were happy with the results of their countrymen in other sporting codes; golf and cricket.
