The Mayflower Educational College team of learners from Potchefstroom has earned a place in the National Participatory Education Technique competition to be held on 28 November 2009 in KwaZulu-Natal.
This follows the college’s impressive display and presentation of solution to road safety challenges facing their community after winning the R12 000 first prize in the North West Participatory Educational Technique (PET) competition held on Thursday in Klerksdorp.
The models that were displayed by all nine teams that competed in the pilot project for the roll out of the technology transfer project also suggested that town planning and improved signage could improve road safety.
The all girls four member team from PH Mooketsi High School in Taung proved that well researched solutions did not need the team to be ten for it win the R8 000 for the second prize. Sekete High School in Kanana (Rustenburg) won the R6 000 third prize of the competition, which is an initiative of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in partnership with the North West Departments of Public Safety and Education.
The competition is aimed at changing learners’ attitude towards road safety by means of participatory education.
