Marine and Coastal Management (MCM) Deputy Director-General (DDG) to move to new portfolio within the department

The Deputy Director-General Marine and Coastal Management (MCM), Dr Monde Mayekiso, will with effect from 1 December 2009, move from his current portfolio to focus on the area of marine science, ecosystem management and climate change within the department.

This follows an agreement between the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Buyelwa Sonjica, Director-General, Ms Nosipho Ngcaba and Dr Monde Mayekiso.

This agreement is informed by the realisation that with oceans covering over 70% of the earth's surface it is pivotal that we recognise the role they play in regulating climate and weather, as many people remain largely unaware of the key connections between a healthy ocean, a healthy climate and our future.

An acting Deputy Director-General will be announced soon.
