Mannya lambasts actions by South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) in Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape Department of Education strongly condemns the continued disruption and the harassment of members of the Legislature and officials of the department who are undertaking school readiness visits in the province.

The Department’s Superintendent-General, Advocate Modidima Mannya, warned that the acts are violating the rights of children to safety and security as well as access to basic education.

“Furthermore, I wish to warn those teachers participating that their actions are unacceptable, illegal, and unprotected, and that they must be prepared to accept the consequences. Should this action persist beyond today, I will have no other option but to take necessary action”, said Mannya.

He said principals of schools were reminded of their responsibilities in the event of any form of strike action, and would be required to report such incidents. “Should they fail to provide such information, they will be held accountable in terms of Section 45 of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), and will face charges of misconduct”, Mannya said.
