A male suspect will answer to charges of bribery, driving a vehicle with a forged licensed disc and driving a vehicle without a license when he appears in the Rustenburg Magistrates Court in the North West Province today, Monday, 3 October 2011.
Lucas Chunda, who has been out on R1 000 bail, was arrested last month in Marikana after a traffic officer reported that he was offered a bribe to release a vehicle he had impounded. A trap was then set up with the police to arrest him while handing over the R900 he had offered to pay the officer.
Chunda had allegedly, earlier that week, fled on foot and left a Toyota Conquest he was driving from Buffelspoort outside Rustenburg to Wonderkop after the traffic officer discovered that he was driving a vehicle with a forged licensed disc and without a driver license.
The 35 year old suspect was the second to be arrested for attempting to bribe a traffic officer last month, and in both instances, members of the North West Road Traffic Management Unit attached to Bojanala Platinum District, had declined the offers and instead pressed corruption charges.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono, has commended the refusal of traffic officers to accept bribes on offer, as an encouraging development that attests that most members of the North West Road Traffic Management Unit are incorruptible.
