Maloyi hands over a house to a 94-year-old

North West Human Settlements Public Safety and Liaison MEC Nono Maloyi constructed an apron and handed over a three bedroom house to a 94-year-old Zonisile Rens of Jourbeton in the Matlosana Local Municipality.

Maloyi’s activity was part of his 67 minutes as a build-up to the Nelson Mandela day which will be celebrated in the Dinokana near Zeerust.

The house which was build through the Each-One-Settle-One programme will see the father of 10 children and grandfather of 44 living the remaining years of his life in a proper structure.

The old man has been living with his wife and two children and grand children in a two roomed house. Oom Rens as he is affectionately known was visibly happy and pleased to see government donating a house for him and his family. He said he was pleased to be of the same age as former President Nelson Mandela.

Speaking in isiXhosa the old man could not stop thanking the government and the contractor for creating a better life for him and his family. He said that his children and great grand children will have a place that they can call home. “Unlike the structure that I was living in, this house will remain the greatest thing that ever happened in my life,” said Rens.

Officially handing over keys to the beneficiary, Maloyi said the department will continue striving to deliver quality houses that are habitable with basic amenities. According to MEC, government will continue to priorities the vulnerable groups.

The departmental MEC could not end his speech without sending a strong warning to contractors who continue to build substandard houses and get government to repair their mistakes. He said those who continue doing so will be terminated from the government system and will never do business with government.

“We are going to terminate contracts of all contractors who continue reaping our government with their shoddy work and we will make sure that they don’t get any business in government,” said Maloyi.

He further congratulated North West housing developers for meeting government halfway and continues building houses for the needy families in the province.

“Government has always been preaching Public Private Partnership, and this is a true reflection of what we have been asking for. Your support for the Each-One-Settle-One initiative makes a huge difference in the lives of our people,” said Maloyi.

He called on business people and public servants to dedicate their services in honor of Nelson Mandela’s life. “We all need to work for 67 minutes to join the world in celebrating the life of our icon. What we are here for is to make a difference in Rens family, and I also urge all South Africans to make a difference,” concluded Maloyi.
