The police have taken control at Malamule following the violence that erupted this morning leaving a complex and government buildings gutted. Almost 20 000 residents went on a rampage after a meeting to demand their own municipality was not acceded to by the Demarcation Board this morning.
Hearing the news, the residents ran amok, started the looting the local shops, the Malamulele Crossing complex, the Home Affairs office and shops at the Mala Plaza were burnt down. Roads leading to the area were closed with burning tyres and stones.
The police managed to bring the situation under control. More than 40 suspects have been arrested and more arrests are imminent. Police presence in the area has also been intensified to monitor and defeat any violence that might erupt. The roads leading have been opened but motorists are warned to drive with caution.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Fannie Masemola has condemned the violence and has sent a stern warning for people not to take the law into their own hands. “When community members have complaints they must not resort to any violent means and destroying of property. We will not hesitate but to take action to bring the perpetrators to book,” said Masemola.
Meanwhile, the arrested suspects will appear at the Malamulele Magistrate Court soon.
