Major abalone bust in Colesburg, Northern Cape

The police and several government departments had a major breakthrough when two men were arrested with abalone worth R5 million at the weighbridge on the N1 near Colesburg in the Northern Cape. This huge success transpired on Monday, 30 June 2014 at 15h15, during a tri-lateral cross border crime prevention between the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape.

A truck traveling from Cape Town en-route to Johannesburg was stopped and searched by the police when 314 bags of abalone with the approximate street value of R5 million rand were discovered. The two male suspects were charged with illegal possession of abalone and illegal transportation of abalone and will appear in the Colesburg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 2 July 2014.
 
The De Aar Cluster Commander, Brigadier Nomahlubi Sofika commended all the role payers (The De Aar Cluster SAPS Task Team, the SAPS K9 unit, SAPS Stock Theft unit, SAPS Vehicle Theft unit, Traffic Department, Department of Nature Conservation and the Department of Health) for a job well done.
