Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has expressed outrage at the torching of the Ratanda Community Library during a protest on Human Rights Day.
“It is rather tragic that in the course of raising their concerns, members of the community decided to commit the unfortunate act of burning a community library. This act has a direct bearing on the progress of our nation. Public amenities such as libraries contribute to our agenda of educating the nation, especially the youth” – said Maile
Among other damaged properties was the Ratanda Depot located on Ratanda‟s extension 7. The cost of building the library is in excess of R2 million and this includes computers, photocopy machines and books that were also torched.
„‟We call on the law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators of this heinous deed to justice as a matter of urgency. We cannot tolerate the destruction of public property whatever the reasons” – added Maile
