Another dream was realised last week Friday as the education MEC Mandla Makupula officially handed over the multimillion rand worth Dumile Senior Primary School to the community of Mahoyana Village just outside Mthatha.
The school which boasts of seven classrooms, a media lab, science lab, administration block and a canteen is the pride and joy of the community. Nyandeni Municipality Mayor, Thoko Sokhanyile welcomed the guests who attended the function. “Teachers and parents have a responsibility towards the learners, learning does not only stop at school but goes beyond it to home.” said Sokhanyile.
The school governing body chairperson, Khathazile Mfundisi, told the audience how the project of building the school came into reality.” Learners were leaving the school because there were no resources and so they went to schools in town which are former model c schools. Since the project started last year the school has seen an increase in learner enrolment beginning this year”, said Mfundisi.
He urged the community, teachers and learners to preserve the school. “We (community of Mahoyana village) have learnt a lot since the beginning of this project and thank the national and provincial department for addressing the need of this community to build a school. It is now up to us the community as well as the teachers and learners to take protect the school, and protect it from the vandals”, said Mfundisi.
An excited acting Principal Nomaculo Mjali welcomed the media lab at the school. “At Dumile senior primary school we now have resources that are sufficient. Learners from this village and surrounding ones will no longer do short computer courses after matric as they would have those skills from foundation phase and will excel” said Mjali.
