Mahikeng-Zeerust road blockaded with burning tyres

Violent protests have erupted at Ottoshoop between Mahikeng and Zeerust resulting in the blockading of the R49 Mahikeng-Zeerust road with burning tyres, rocks and other rabbles since around 15h00 on Friday.

North West Road Safety Traffic Management Authorities wish to advise motorists to avoid using the road for the safety of their vehicles but to opt for other alternative routes until further notice. Police are at the scene to intervene and ensure that the road is reopened as soon as possible.

It has not been established what the protests are about this time around but earlier protests in the area were demanding housing provision for the nearby informal settlements.

An in principle agreement had been reached between MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono and Mahikeng Local Municipality Mayor, Ms Lena Miga Executive Mayor of Mahikeng in September to top-up of 107 housing units for beneficiaries from around the area to 400.

The need for an alternative land for a housing development project  to be urgently identified with the affected community or advanced designs and technology to be considered for dolomite conditions in the area was also adopted.
