Mahikeng multi-million housing projects to be acclerated

Agreement to unblock 8 housing development projects valued at over R85, 7 million was reached between North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono and Executive Mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality, Councillor Lena Miga on Thursday. The projects for construction of 2481 housing units include building of 200 Rental housing units to alleviate shortage of accommodation in the provincial capital.

The new Community Residential Units Project to commence next month is targeted at beneficiaries earning a combined income of between R7000-R15000 to ensure that rental is paid. In line with Breaking New Ground (BNG) human settlement plan, social amenities are to be provided for on the targeted site for sustainability of the project and for it to meets the needs of the targeted group.

Other projects that are part of the provincial housing turnaround plan dubbed “Thuntsha Lerole-Kick the dust” include construction of 1000 housing units across Lonely Park, Setlopo, Signal Hill and Majemantsho villages. Over R29 million has been budget for the project.

Contractors are also expected to be on site in Moshaweng (300 units),Madiba A - Kubu (250 units)  Moletsamongwe (250 units),Mahikeng Ext 39 (230 units) and in Mooifontein(119) for construction to commence in the next 2-3 weeks.

An in principle agreement was also reached to top-up of 107 housing units for beneficiaries from around Ottoshoop to 400. Alternative land for a housing development project is to be urgently identified with the affected community or advanced designs and technology to be considered for dolomite conditions in the area.

An urgent meeting with the Ottoshoop community is earmarked for next week. The said community had recently blockaded the Zeerust-Mahikeng road demanding provision of housing.
