Mafikeng high defended its road safety debate provincial championship

The Mafikeng High School debate team has successfully defended its title as the North West Road Safety Debate champions. The team of five pupils impressed the judges during the provincial debate competition that was held in Rustenburg.

The team which defeated the long time national champions, Gauteng, during last year’s national competition looked very determined to retain the national championship to the province.

According to the debate competition organisers, this year the province will be represented by pupils from different schools which won the district competition. The team is been constituted by two members from the Ngaka Modiri Molema and one from the remaining three districts.

The Road Safety Campaign debate competition is aimed at encouraging learners to be aware of road safety issues, teach learners to take responsibility of road safety issues that affect their communities and to develop and enhance the learners’ presentation, communication and listening skills.

The debate competition is in line with the strategic focus of the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison which is to provide a sustainable human settlements and safer communities.

The departmental MEC, Nono Maloyi congratulated the team and wished them the best for the up-coming national competition. He said the school has made the province proud during last year’s competition and they must keep up the good work by doing their outmost best to defend the championship later this year.

“It is through programmes like these where as a province we work towards empowering future generation towards creating safer roads and further reduce death toll on our roads,” said Maloyi.

According to the judges, the winning team, Mafikeng High has proved to be well vested with the topic, ‘the intensification of Arrive Alive through Decade of Action for road safety will reduce the death toll in South African roads’. The team was further praised for displaying acumen in presenting the topic and argued with facts.

The team’s coach and educator at the Mahikeng High School, Peter Mensah, said that the competition did not only address road safety issues at length, but also assisted learners to be on top of the question at hand. He said that they have displayed enthusiasm and passion in the topic.

“I’m definitely sure that the team will be able to defend the title and make the province proud again,” said Mensah.

The team will represent the province during the national road safety debate competition that will be held in the Western Cape later this year.
