Lowveld dams hold steady above 100% as DWS promotes wise water use

The latest Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) weekly State of Reservoirs report, released this week indicates that dam levels across the Lowveld and Ehlanzeni District in Mpumalanga remain stable and above 100%, providing a positive outlook for water availability in the region.

While a few dams recorded marginal declines during the reporting period, all listed dams continue to hold water levels above full capacity. Most dams remained unchanged, reflecting stable water storage conditions despite seasonal fluctuations.

According to the report, Buffelskloof Dam remains at 100.5%, Klipkopjes Dam at 100.2%, Primkop Dam at 101.3%, Da Gama Dam at 100.3%, Inyaka Dam at 100.1%, Vygeboom Dam at 100.5%, and Ohrigstad Dam at 100.1%.

The dams that recorded slight decreases in water levels include Blyderivierpoort Dam, which declined from 100.9% to 100.8%; Driekoppies Dam from 100.7% to 100.5%; Longmere Dam from 101.3% to 101.1%; Witklip Dam from 100.6% to 100.4%; Kwena Dam from 100.7% to 100.6%; and Nooitgedacht Dam from 100.3% to 100.1%.

Although dam levels in the Lowveld remain strong, the report shows a slight decrease in average storage levels across Mpumalanga and its Water Management Areas. The provincial average dropped marginally from 99.9% to 99.7%.

Within the Water Management Areas, the Limpopo-Olifants WMA decreased from 101.5% to 101.3%, while the Inkomati-Usuthu WMA dropped from 99.5% to 99.3%.

At district level, Ehlanzeni District, which falls within the Inkomati WMA, recorded a slight decrease from 100.6% to 100.5%. Gert Sibande District, part of the Usuthu WMA, dropped from 99.1% to 98.9%, while Nkangala District, located within the Olifants WMA, remained unchanged at 100.5%.

The Department encourages households, businesses and institutions to continue using water wisely, repair leaking taps and pipes on their properties, and report water leaks on municipal and bulk infrastructure to the relevant water services authorities. Every litre saved contributes to protecting precious water resources and ensuring a sustainable water supply for future generations.
