Limpopo Provincial final leg of the Declared War against Alcohol Abuse Rally

The Provincial Responsible Alcohol Traders Rallies program by the Department of Safety, Security and Liaison and concerned stakeholders was a resounding success. A sizeable ground has been covered in the fight against Alcohol; this move was perpetuated by the recent released crime statistics that labelled alcohol as a contributing factor to crime in general and by an outcry from communities in regard to the non-adherence to liquor Act license conditions, mushrooming of taverns or liquor outlets and the high number thereof near places of worship and schools.

We were therefore compelled as government to reinforce against any crime contributing factors and to ensure that people are and feel safe in the streets and their homes in Limpopo. The rallies were successfully held in Capricorn, Vhembe, Waterberg and Mopani Districts since the launch of the programme in September 2011. The Department of Safety, Security and Liaison has since declared war against alcohol abuse and together with concerned stakeholders and convened a series of workshops to address liquor traders.

The sessions were set to create awareness amongst operators about responsible liquor trading. Responsible Trader programme is set to help liquor outlet owners to understand the importance of strict adherence to the conditions set in the liquor licences, thereby playing a positive role in the reduction of substance abuse with possible spinoffs in the reduction of contact crimes. The Sekhukhune District Responsible Trader Programme Education Rally which is the final leg of the programme will take place at Lebowakgomo Civic Hall on 18 October 2011 at 10h00. More than 250 traders are expected to attend.

We further wish to call for support of the law enforcement agencies as communities, organised community organisations and any able individuals of this Province. Together, we can achieve more in the fight against all sorts of criminal activities happening in our space.

We are declaring war against alcohol abuse!!!
