Limpopo MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison George Phadagi’s Farewell Message to the Provincial Commissioner Lt-General Mashego

Today Limpopo takes leave of the Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Amon Mashigo who gave the South African Police Service (SAPS) 30 years of dedicated service in its relentless fight against crime and criminality. He spent his last year in the SAPS as the Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo after having had been redeployed from the Free State Province last year.

His appointment as Limpopo Provincial Commissioner drew the derision and condemnation of the regular culprits who would not allow an opportunity to pass without venting their frustration at what good government is doing for the people of South Africa.

A true and professional policeman he is, Lt-Gen Mashigo ignored all these uncalled for and premature attacks and settled down to the task at hand, the fight against crime.

Lt-Gen Mashigo has not disappointed during his tenure as the Provincial Police Commissioner. The recently released 2010/2011 Crime Statistics bear witness to the good he has done for the people of Limpopo in remarkably bringing down the provincial crime statistics. Limpopo has the lowest crime incidents compared to the other eight provinces.

Syndicates which have been wreaking havoc in Makhado, Thohoyandou and Polokwane have been smashed. A strong message has been sent to career criminals from other provinces that Limpopo cannot be their playground.

All these strides in our fight against criminals have been made under the watch of Lt-General Mashego. It is therefore with a tinge of sadness that we today take leave of this crime-buster par excellence. I, on behalf of the government and the people of Limpopo, thank him and wish him the best for the future.

We are however confident that Lt-Geneneral Mashigo’s successor will find a solid foundation to build upon as we continue the fight against crime and criminality. The new Provincial Police Commissioner will also find men and women who are the embodiment of service with pride.

The process to find a permanent replacement for Lt-Gen Mashigo is at an advanced stage and an official announcement will be made at the appropriate time.
