A special sitting of the Fourth Democratic Legislature of Limpopo has sworn-in Mr Chupu Stanley Mathabatha as the new premier of Limpopo provincial government.

In his acceptance speech the new premier conceded that the challenges of the province are well documented and well known.

Among other challenges he alluded to the following:

  • uneven public health services
  • non inclusive human development settlement
  • impropriety and corruption.

However, he also acknowledged that a firm foundation that has been laid by his predecessors. This was substantiated by a recent survey done by StatsSa which confirmed the gradual reduction ratio of dependency in deprived areas of our province.

Since Limpopo is well endowed in mineral deposits and a variety of tourism offerings, there is a unique opportunity to expand the productive capacity of the provincial economy.

In this regard, he continued to assert that more concerted efforts will have to be made to further reduce dependency through creation of more employment opportunities in tourism, agriculture and the mining sector.

Prior to the official announcement of his cabinet tomorrow, Hon. Mathabatha highlighted that change is part and parcel of the democratic process and is not aimed at changing government policy. He made an appeal that no one should feel unwanted, aggrieved, anxious or apprehensive about these changes.

Opposition parties congratulated Mathabatha on his appointment. They stated that it is quite symbolic that he assumes office on Mandela Day. They further advised him to put party politics aside and let service delivery be a priority and request for wisdom, like king Solomon to be able lead the province.
