Limpopo Health Department to intensify free medical male circumcision

In an effort to reduce the rate of new HIV infections, the Limpopo Department of Health and Social Development is set to roll-out a massive Medical Male Circumcision (MMC) as part of the overall package of protection in the fight against the spread of this dreadful disease.

Medical circumcision is the full removal of the foreskin, thus reduces the risk of sexually transmitted diseases; reduces the risk of HIV infection as it decreases the possibility of tearing and bruising.

"We urge people to take advantage of this campaign to consider Medical Male Circumcision as one of the options for male sexual and reproductive health. All our hospitals in the province are open to conduct medical male circumcision at no cost", Magadzi announced.

Magadzi further said people who want to be circumcised at our hospitals must book their space in time to avoid disappointment as the need for this service might exceed expectation, saying already at Tshilidzini hospital more than 250 people are in line to be circumcised.

Meanwhile the Limpopo Health department says qualifying health workers, including those who are specifically trained to conduct circumcision (surgical) procedure will be on high alert to assist at initiation schools throughout the province depending on the need.

"We are working closely with our traditional leaders and we remain confident that things will go well at initiation schools, including meeting all the necessary requirements", Magadzi said.
